Prior
to my outrigger experiences, I walked marathons with the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society's Team-in-Training (LLS TNT) and was a Walk Coach and Mentor, 2006-2012.
I led groups with some of the highest participant retentions in the U.S.: teams ranging in size from 40-130 people. I also fundraised for many of the races, reaching my goal of raising $10,000 for LLS. I completed two full marathons and seventeen half
marathons all over the west coast. I enjoy using my professional leadership skills in a volunteer setting and am proud to support an organization that is working to end cancers that have touched too many friends and family.
Endurance walking FAQs:
- How long does it take to walk a marathon (26.2 miles)? It depends on your pace. I walked at about 4mph so a full marathon takes over 6 hours. It's like being on a hike, so I always carried electrolyte fluids and snacks.
- What is your best time? I've lost track...for most walkers, just finishing the race is the most important thing. Plus, the bling (medals). But honestly, as a Coach and Mentor, my race time really wasn't my focus. I was more concerned with helping fellow walkers finish safely.
- What does it feel like? As long as you train properly, long distance walking feels great! Walkers have far fewer injuries than runners and we tend to be a pretty smiley bunch. Even when I'm not training with TNT, I continue to walk several times a week. After a total knee replacement surgery in November, 2021, my walking distances have been reduced. Did walking so far lead to my surgery? No. Many knee issues are hereditary. I know walkers who've completed between 100-200 races and they're all fine with no knee troubles.
- What about injuries? Several of my team mates became hypothermic (in Santa Monica, of all places) and had to be put into tubs of warm water after completing the Los Angeles Marathon in 2011. It was a very cold, windy, and rainy day. I only suffered calf cramps because of the cold, and I learned that in cold conditions, I needed to wear support socks or calf sleeves. Silver lining: we received warm towels and hot chocolate in nearby hotels at the finish line. With proper training, walker injuries are rare.
- Do you have a favorite race? Yes, the Big Sur Half-Marathon, which is held in Monterey along the central coast of California. I've done it twice and it's the most beautiful course I've experienced.
